Get Your Apartment Winter-Ready: A Renter Checklist
Winter Shows Up Fast Here
Salt Lake usually sees its first freeze in October, and the first real snow is never far behind. A half hour of prep now saves you cold nights, high bills, and avoidable maintenance calls later. Work through this checklist before the first cold snap.Test Your Heat This Week
Turn your thermostat to heat and let it run for ten minutes. You want to find a problem on a 55-degree evening, not a 20-degree night when maintenance requests stack up building-wide. If the air never warms, you smell something burning beyond the first few minutes of dust burn-off, or the unit cycles on and off rapidly, submit a maintenance request right away.Check Windows and Doors for Drafts
Hold your hand along window edges and the bottom of your entry door on a windy day. If you feel cold air moving, report it. Drafts drive up your heating bill and make rooms feel colder than the thermostat says. A rolled towel at a door base works as a stopgap, but tell us so we can fix the seal properly.Fight the Dry Air
Utah winter air is dry, and heated indoor air is drier. That means static, cracked skin, and bad sleep. A small humidifier in your bedroom makes a real difference. Keep it clean and use distilled water if you can; our hard tap water leaves white dust with some models.Know What to Report vs. Handle Yourself
Report these to maintenance: heat not working, drafts and failed window seals, water stains on ceilings or walls, and any pipe that knocks or leaks. Handle these yourself: replacing your own light bulbs, reversing ceiling fans to push warm air down, and keeping vents clear of furniture and curtains. When in doubt, submit the request. We would rather check something minor than repair something major.Lock Down Package Security Before the Holidays
Package volume doubles between November and January, and so do package thefts everywhere. Know how deliveries work at your building, pick up packages the day they arrive, and ship anything valuable with a signature requirement. If you will be traveling, ask a neighbor to grab deliveries or pause shipments until you are back. One Last Thing
If you park outside, put an ice scraper in your car this month, not the morning you need it. And watch for our November post: a full guide to the holiday season in downtown Salt Lake City, from the Temple Square lights to ice skating a few blocks from your door.Need to submit a maintenance request? Do it through your resident portal or contact Seasons on City Creek office and we will walk you through it.
