Your Guide to the Holidays in Downtown Salt Lake City
Your Guide to the Holidays in Downtown Salt Lake City The Best Season to Live Downtown People drive in from all over the valley for downtown's holiday season. You live here. This guide covers what to see, when it starts, and how to skip the parking headaches everyone else fights. Temple Square Lights The lights at Temple Square turn on the day after Thanksgiving, November 27 this year, and run through the season. Displays are scaled back during the temple renovation, but the grounds are still worth an evening walk, and it costs nothing. Go on a weeknight to avoid the biggest crowds. City Creek, The Gateway, and Gallivan Plaza City Creek Center hangs its holiday displays right across from Temple Square, so pair the two in one walk. The Gateway adds its own lights and seasonal events on the west side of downtown. Gallivan Plaza brings back its outdoor ice rink for the winter; skating there on a weeknight, with the towers lit up around you, is one of the best cheap dates in the city. Tuesday and Thursday skate deals have run in past seasons, so check the current schedule. Zoo Lights at Hogle Zoo Utah's Hogle Zoo runs its Zoo Lights event in the evenings during the holiday season, with more than 200 lighted displays, s'mores, and hot chocolate. It is a short drive or bus ride up Sunnyside Avenue. Check the zoo's site for this season's dates and tickets before you go. Getting Around During the Holidays Downtown traffic and parking get worse every weekend from Thanksgiving to New Year's. You have the advantage: walk or take TRAX. The Temple Square, City Center, and Gallivan Plaza stops put you within a block of the big attractions. If friends visit, tell them to park once at your place, if guest parking allows, and walk the rest. Thinking About Moving Downtown? If you are reading this from the suburbs while planning a lights trip, consider what it is like to have all of this outside your front door. Seasons on City Creek has apartments available for year-end move-in. Schedule a tour at https://entrata.citycreek.seasonsforrent.com/ and see the neighborhood at its best.
